SUMMARY:Setting the record straight on evidence-based exercises for falls prevention
DESCRIPTION:Falls are a major public health concern – they are common in people aged 65 and older\, and are the leading cause of injury in this age group. Around one-third of generally healthy people aged 65 and older will have at least one fall each year. It is important that health professionals working with older adults implement and promote evidence-based exercises that can decrease the incidence of fall related injury. Exercises to prevent falls can increase muscle strength\, flexibility\, balance\, and reaction time as these risk factors for falls are considered the most readily modified. \nAhead of Stay On Your Feet®’s Move Your Body campaign\, this webinar\, with guest speaker Jenny Conlon from Notre Dame University\, aims to go over the different evidence-based exercises that are proven to reduce falls in older adults\, along with any tools or equipment that health professionals can use\, as well as the screening methods for falls when working with an older adult client. \nThis webinar aims to: \n\nIncrease knowledge of evidence-based exercises for falls prevention\nIncrease awareness of the different tools and equipment that can be used in evidence-based falls prevention exercises\nIncrease skills in performing falls prevention screening\n\nWho should attend? \nThis webinar is suitable for early career allied health professionals\, support workers\, carers\, fitness instructors\, therapy assistants\, peer exercise leaders\, health promotion program coordinators\, public health advocates\, and early career physiotherapists and occupational therapists working with older adults. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:COVID-19 impact on mental health in older adults
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has had an impact on the mental health and well-being of older adults in Western Australia. Social isolation is a continuing problem for older adults and may lead to loneliness. Social isolation is the absence of relationships with family and friends on an individual level and with society on a broader level. Good mental health contributes greatly to an overall feeling of well-being. Untreated mental health disorders in older adults can lead to diminished functioning\, substance abuse\, poor quality of life\, and increased mortality. \nJoin Injury Matters with guest speaker Deb Reveley from Brain Ambulance as we chat through the current evidence on the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of older adults in WA\, and the interventions we as health professionals can promote for healthy ageing and reducing the impact of social isolation. \nThis session aims to: \n\nIncrease awareness of the impacts of COVID-19 on the mental health of older adults in Western Australia.\nIncrease knowledge of the mental health issues facing older adults in Western Australia.\nIncrease knowledge of the interventions to promote healthy ageing and reduce the impact of social isolation and loneliness.\nIncrease knowledge of barriers for older adults seeking assistance and intervention.\nIncrease knowledge of referral points for older adults requiring intervention.\n\nWho can attend? \nThis webinar is suitable for public health and health promotion professionals\, mental health advocates and professionals\, aged care workers\, support workers\, allied health workers\, and community services or organisations that work with older adults in the community setting. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Incontinence and falls in older adults
DESCRIPTION:Incontinence in older adults can be a significant risk factor to falls\, as problems with bowel and bladder control can impact on an older person’s ability to stay active\, healthy\, and independent. SUMMARY:Breast density - what does it mean for GPs and their patients?
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nMammographic breast density can be a challenge for general\npractitioners (GPs) and their patients. High mammographic breast\ndensity lowers the sensitivity of breast cancer screening; thereby\nincreasing the risk of an interval cancer between screening episodes\,\nand moderately increases breast cancer risk. Breast Screen WA is the\nonly Australian state screening program to notify women and their\nGP when a mammogram shows marked increased breast density (and\nhave been doing so for over 10 years). Women are advised in writing\nto consult their GP to discuss the significance of their breast density\,\nto have a clinical examination and receive further advice about their\nbreast cancer risk.\nAt this webinar\, Associate Professor Jennifer Stone will discuss the\nsignificance of breast density\, its occurrence\, how to discuss the\nimplications of increased breast density with patients\, and the way\nforward
